sllcertificatemicrosoftDue to an expired SSL certificate, Windows Azure cloud storage was down for 12 hours over the weekend. This worldwide outage has impacted HTTPS traffic and a number of Windows Azure cloud services that are dependent on cloud storage. Also, according to ZDNet, the outage has also affected the Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server on Azure.

The SSL expire that brought Microsoft azure and its services down is a bit trivial for Microsoft. Knowing that the company can buy an SLL certificate for as little as $70 per year or they can make their own, its less likely that this error can happen to Microsoft.

Windows Azure will provide the root cause of the problem in their blog post anytime soon.
