Google Cloud has just added support for native MySQL connection for developers. This feature will allow external applications to connect to Google Cloud SQL instance using the MySQL Wire Protocol (MWP). MWP is the standard connection protocol of MySQL databases.

With the new support Google cloud is urging those that are using Google Custom JDC driver for MySQL connections to MWP because of its greater speed, usability, stability, and compatibility.

Allowing native MySQL connections is an attempt of Google to support third-party tools as opposed to just using in-house tools. Since most are familiar with MySQL, it will be easier for many to migrate to existing applications and use their MySQL knowledge and tools in Google Cloud.
